Favorites (mostly in order,
but not necessarily)
- Schaefer 3100 head sail furler (2001)
The 3100 was the first major upgrade we made
to GreatWhite, and to this day it remains my favorite. It never
fails, it's always ready when I'm ready, and it's built like
a tank.
- Schaefer Furling Boom (2002)
I wanted all lines led to the cockpit, since
I'm a bit afraid of getting wet. So we looked high and low for a
way to achieve that and Fabio came up with the idea of a
Schaefer Furling Boom. Even though it cost exactly the same
amount of money as our Catalina 27, this upgrade has made
raising, reefing, and lowering the main an essentially painless
exercise.
This is a very early (serial number 14) furling
boom (I think it was the first one sold on the West Coast), and
we've had our ups and downs with learing how to use it, but I
wouldn't trade it for a new Beneteau 44.
- FrigoBoat Holding Plate Refrigeration
The FrigoBoat refrigeration system is simply
flawless. As of December 2012 it's run more than 3200 hours (I have an hour meter on
its water pump), it is SILENT, it isn't fussy
(unlike certain other refrigeration systems in which we invested
more than $5000), and it asks for nothing. FrigoBoat USA doesn't
like to sell the holding plate model, but we find it to be great
for the type of sailing we do.
- DirtDevil Central Vacuum System
A great addition to any boat. Inexpensive,
powerful, and the hose reaches everywhere.
- Avanti 2001S clothes washer
This is a very small washer with an integrated
dryer. It's only drawback is that it does not spin, so you have
to wring out the clothes by hand. We never use the dryer 'cause
it uses too much electricity and makes the forward cabin very
warm. But it's very handy to have a way to wash clothes and
towels and the like...
